Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide: Which is right for you?

Semaglutide (Brands: Ozempic/Wegovy)

Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide:  As medical research continues to advance, new treatments for type 2 diabetes & obesity are constantly emerging, and many of these treatments can also have the added benefit of promoting weight loss. Two of the latest treatments to hit the market, semaglutide and tirzepatide. Both are injectable medications that not only help manage blood sugar levels but can also aid in weight loss.

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by mimicking the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1. This hormone helps to regulate blood sugar levels by increasing insulin secretion and slowing down the emptying of the stomach. In clinical trials, semaglutide has been shown to be highly effective in reducing HbA1c levels (a measure of average blood sugar over the past 2-3 months) by up to 1.5%, therefore showing promising weight loss effects. In fact, in one clinical trial, semaglutide was shown to lead to an average weight loss of 15 pounds over 68 weeks.

Another benefit of semaglutide is its once-weekly dosing schedule. Unlike other GLP-1 receptor agonists, some people may find it more convenient to administer semaglutide just once a week, instead of requiring daily or twice-daily administrations.

Tirzepatide (Brand: Mounjaro/Zepbound)

Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist that works by increasing insulin secretion and decreasing glucagon secretion. Therefore leading to a reduction in blood sugar levels and an increase in satiety (feeling of fullness). In clinical trials, researchers have shown that tirzepatide significantly reduces HbA1c levels by up to 2.4%, surpassing other GLP-1 agonist. Additionally, tirzepatide has the potential to promote weight loss. In fact, one clinical trial demonstrated that tirzepatide led to participants achieving an average weight loss of 20 pounds over 52 weeks. Some patients also report less side effects.

Another benefit of tirzepatide is its flexibility in dosing. Typically, people administer Tirzepatide once a week, but you can also administer it every two weeks to once a month.
